Professional Librarian Positions: To work in a professional librarian position, usually you will need to have earned post-graduate level qualifications such as those from the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia and the EU member states. This means a Masters of Library and Information Science or equivalent degree accredited by the American Library Association (ALA), the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) or the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) from the UK. Typically, librarians work in positions that require advanced knowledge of library and information science. Examples of positions include Reference Services, Outreach Librarians, Cataloging Librarians, Bibliographers, Archivists, and Heads of Departments.
Technician Positions: There are several types of qualifications that are generally required for technical positions, depending on the type of position. For example, a Bachelor's degree in a subject discipline such as Computer Science may be required for computer related positions. A Library Technician's diploma may be required for positions such as an Interlibrary Loan Technician or Cataloging Technician. Other qualifications such as a university degree plus library experience will also be considered. Depending upon the position, extensive library experience may allow candidates to supervise functional units.
Assistant Positions: These positions usually require a high school diploma. Examples of these types include Circulation Desk Assistants and Cataloging/Processing Assistants.
Other types of positions: There are other types of positions that will be available in the National Library. The qualifications required will be determined by the type of position.
Language Requirements: The language of the Qatar Foundation is English. Candidates will need to be able to communicate in English verbally and in writing at a professional level. Candidates who are fluent in Arabic or other languages are strongly encouraged to apply. A number of positions will require both English and Arabic language skill proficiency.
