Qatar National Library will offer visitors exciting learning opportunities in February, filled with different events and lectures that will focus on topics including technology, heritage, sports, and arts.
The Library’s art exhibition, “Reesha” is open for visitors till 16 February. Under the slogan “We Welcome the World to Qatar 2022,” the exhibition showcases children’s artwork, inspired by Qatar’s 2022 World Cup™ stadiums, with audio-descriptive guides and high-contrast raised images also making it accessible for visitors with impaired vision.
In celebration of Qatar-MENASA Year of Culture 2022 and in partnership with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, the Library invites visitors to look through a window into the life and work of the Algerian artist, Baya Mahieddine. The exhibition showcases a selection of 18 works that are intertwined with Baya’s lifelong themes to reveal the fictional and nonfictional elements that continued to resonate throughout Baya’s work until the very end. The exhibition is open till 30 March.
The Library invites children and toddlers for “Storytime” at the Children’s Library where they will read and make up stories together. “Storytime” for toddlers will be held on 5, 19, and 26 February. For children, this will be held on 6, 13 and 20 February,
On 9 February, the Library will host a training program to demonstrate assistive technology devices for dyslexic readers and orienting online resources with dyslexic-friendly fonts.
On 11 February, the Library invites visitors to a series of lectures that focus on the fields of childhood, education, and children’s health. For this lecture, speech and language pathologist Ruba Dababat from The Learning Center at Qatar Foundation will be explaining how play is essential for children.
On 12 February, as part of Qatar Sport Day, the Library will be holding a panel discussion that aims to introduce the golden age of Qatari football through the football pioneers and their achievements, as well as shed light on the Qatari artists and authors who documented the national identity through their works that made the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ one of the best of all time.
The Library invites children to join the Najem Es’hail book club on 13 February. Running for three sessions over three weeks, each week we will discuss a different book, offering insights into plots and characters in a fun and relaxed environment.
In celebration of Qatar National Sport Day, the Library invites visitors to put on their trainers and join for a walk to discuss the book Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson. Held on 14 February, the walk will begin at Qatar National Library and finishes at Oxygen Park.
On 15 February, the Library will host an online lecture that will present a historical overview of pearling in the Gulf and will highlight the pearling-related historical collection at the Heritage Library.
In addition, Dr. Alexandre Caeiro, Associate Professor of Islamic Studies at the College of Islamic Studies, will present the laws that governed the pearl trade.
On 22 February, the Library will host an online lecture with anthropologist and historian, Daniel Martin Varisco, who will discuss his new book, “A Survey of Indigenous Knowledge of Seasonal, Astronomical, and Agricultural Information in Almanacs and Folklore of the Arabian Gulf.”
The book extensively analyzes traditional information based on local almanacs, Arabic texts and poetry by Gulf writers, ethnographic interviews, and online forums. The lecture will also introduce the rich almanacs kept at the Heritage Library that were used to help write the book.
