22 September 2016
Qatar National Library (QNL), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), organised a successful series of events and training sessions for the public throughout December. The series of programmes was designed to further support QF’s mission to foster a progressive society by disseminating knowledge, preserving Qatar’s heritage and engaging the local community.

QNL also participated in the Qatar Foundation celebrations of the Qatar National Day. QNL’s activities took place at the QF tent at Darb El-Saai national celebration ground, and included story-telling activities for Children, free on-site registration that allow the public to freely access a diversified collection of online databases offered by QNL, and engaged members of the public by showcasing the library’s services.

One of the many activities organised by QNL included a book discussion of Dave Eggers’s Zeitoun. The book presents the true story of Abdulrahman Zeitoun, a Syrian-American living in New Orleans, Louisiana, who chose to face Hurricane Katrina. After the hurricane, Zeitoun traveled the flooded city rescuing neighbors and distributing food and water. Soon after the storm, Zeitoun was arrested and accused of terrorist activities. He was refused medical attention and the use of a phone to alert his family of his whereabouts.

In addition to cultural and educational activities, QNL also offered training sessions on the use of online resources offered by the library.

A series of interactive and practical training sessions helped residents familiarise themselves with selected Arabic online resources in: E-Marefa, Al Manhal, and Dar Almandumah Collection. The 'E-Marefa' online resource, one of the leading Arabic language databases provides over 1,000 scholarly journals from the MENA region. The 'Al Manhal' online database provides access to Arabic electronic content and full-text Arabic publications.

Training sessions also focused on the ‘Dar Almandumah Collection' database, which included ‘EduSearch’, ‘EcoLink’, ‘IslamicInfo’, ‘HumanIndex’, and ‘AraBase’ which are all considered a rich resource of most of the periodicals and yearbooks published in Arabic worldwide.

Commenting on the series of events, Saadi A. Al Said, QNL's Associate Director for Administration and Planning, said: “QNL continues to spread knowledge and promote the culture of reading among all residents of Qatar, which is one of its main responsibilities,”

“The events and activities are aligned to QNL’s mission which is to spread knowledge, nurture imagination, cultivate creativity, and preserve the nation’s heritage for the future.” he added Qatar National Library is currently offering free online access to a vast collection of online resources including the latest bestsellers, classical works, concerts, top academic journals and documentaries.
