Qatar National Library (QNL) is organising a series of events and training sessions this month available for all residents of Qatar. The program includes an Arabic book discussion and practical training sessions about how to take advantage of the online databases currently offered free to all residents of Qatar through the QNL website.
Interactive and practical training sessions will help residents familiarise themselves with the ‘SpringerLink’, ‘Science Direct’, and ‘Scopus’ online databases.
‘SpringerLink’ is an eBook and online journal database that specialises in science, technology and medicine while ‘Science Direct’ is a leading online resource for making a wide variety of scientific collections available, including over 2,500 journals and nearly 20,000 book chapters.
‘Scopus’ online database, on the other hand, represents a large abstract and citation database containing around 21,000 titles from more than 5,000 international publishers in the fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and arts and humanities.
The ‘SpringerLink’ training sessions will be offered on 8 May 2014, while the ‘ScienceDirect’ and ‘Scopus’ training sessions will be held on 21 and 22 May 2014.
This month’s book discussion will look at Ali Izetbegović’s Islam between East and West. In this book, Mr. Begović uses a fresh and accessible science-based approach to discuss the teachings and institutions of Islam alongside questions of religion, philosophy, culture, ethics, art, and drama.
The author believes that "to have a true understanding of the World, we must know the real sources of the ideas that govern this World and know their meanings.” The group will discuss his approach as well as the book’s varied themes, and will be an interesting event for new and frequent readers alike who have an interest in these areas.
The book discussion event takes place on 14 May at the TV Room/ HBKU Student Center, Education City, and for more information about all of QNL’s May events, please visit www.qnl.qa.
These events are open to all. Indeed, Qatar National Library is currently offering free online access to a vast collection of online resources including the latest bestsellers, classical works, concerts, top academic journals and documentaries.
