Qatar National Library to Host MetLib 2016 Qatar Conference in April
Qatar National Library (QNL) will organise a number of informative events in April, which aim to emphasise the importance of libraries in community development.
Focusing on the vital role public and metropolitan libraries play in communities, MetLib 2016 Qatar conference will be held from 23rd to 28th April at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC). Leading experts and librarians will discuss the growth and development of metropolitan libraries in Qatar and beyond during the conference.
Engineer Saadi Al Said, Director of Administration and Planning at QNL, said: “Public and metropolitan libraries contribute to building progressive communities. Because of their vast reach, activities, and valuable resources, public libraries significantly contribute to the development of solid identities for communities.”
“By participating in local and regional events, we gain a great deal of insight in effectively addressing needs of the community,” Eng Al Said added.
QNL will also participate in the 22nd Annual Conference and Exhibition of Special Libraries Association/Arabian Gulf Chapter (SLA-AGC) taking place from 19th to 21st April in Kuwait. The conference will explore ‘Future Challenges of Library and Information Profession’, and industry experts from around the world will speak on the current and future challenges libraries in the region face, and how development will ensue alongside digital progress.
As part of QNL’s public lectures, on 4th April, Dr Scott Morrison, Senior Lecturer of Law at Middlesex University London, will give a talk entitled, ‘The Legal Protection of Islamic Manuscripts in War: International and British Law and the Case of Syria’. The lecture will take place at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar (GU-Q) in Education City and is conducted in collaboration with UCL Qatar.
QNL’s popular research workshop, ‘Conducting Research’, aimed at helping undergraduate students improve their research skills, was held on 3rd April at the HBKU Student Center. This session covered “Citation Essentials” and “Writing Research Papers”.
In addition to the numerous events focusing on the development of library systems, this month’s book discussion will feature the novel entitled, ‘Telepathy’, written by Sudanese author Amir Tag Elsir. The author explores the striking relationship between a writer’s reality and imagination. The narrative, set in Khartoum, highlights the two sides of the Sudanese capital; the bustling city and the neglected, poverty-stricken metropolitan. Mr Elsir will attend the discussion, which will be conducted in English on 13th April in the TV Lounge at the HBKU Student Center.
