The introduction of new technologies and the promotion of related education among young people is expanding the role of traditional libraries. A recent lecture by renowned designer Taekyeom Lee, hosted at Qatar National Library, highlighted the future of 3D design and printing, and how libraries can play a crucial role in promoting new technologies among the next generation.
The lecture, “Digitally Crafted: Digital Design and Fabrication,” was held at the Library as part of The Crossing Boundaries Lecture series, an initiative of Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar.
“Digital printing is a method to make new objects. The ideas behind these objects are more important. Making such technologies available in libraries is an easy way for people to bring their ideas to fruition,” said Lee, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, USA. “I am delighted to see that people in Qatar have access to 3D printers at the Library, which is an important place for users to explore new ideas and innovations.”
Users can access the Library’s 3D printing equipment at the Innovation Station, and can learn about the essential concepts of the technology by attending one of the many workshops taking place at the Library throughout the year.
“It was incredible to see in this lecture how creative you can be with 3D printing. It's very important for us to have access to these technologies, and it is amazing that the Library is providing us with these resources,” said Tarek Hamzeh, a participant at the lecture.
“I think 3D printing will play a big role in the future. It is great that the Library recognizes this and helps us develop these skills.” said Mariam Amini, who attended the lecture.
