Throughout October, and as part of its mission to support Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development in furthering knowledge and learning to create a knowledge-based economy for Qatar, Qatar National Library (QNL) is encouraging children of all ages to unlock their potential by reading, through offering free training programmes on the Scholastic children’s databases, one of the biggest publishers for children’s books in the world.
The Scholastic collection includes the ‘BookFlix’, a great interactive literacy resource for pre-K to Grade 3; ‘TrueFlix’, an informative programme, which presents science and social studies for students in Grades 3 – 5; and ‘Grolier Online’, the most comprehensive source of non-fiction content for children from the age of eight years old.
The QNL children’s section is also offering a range of free training sessions, including how to use the ‘Edutechnoz’ online database, which helps children learn Arabic in a fun way through playing games. Other training sessions focus on the ‘OneClickDigital’ that provides digital audio-books of diverse content in English, and the ‘Zinio’, which offers access to the full version of hundreds of popular magazines, such as ‘Zamoof’ (kids education), and the ‘Junior Reference Collection’, which delivers access to authoritative and relevant reference content in various areas.
QNL’s children section also regularly organises a wide range of activities and events. The recent successful book launch of ′The Blue Jackal′ saw more than 150 children and their families participate in the event’s various activities.
Another popular event held recently was the Garangao festival organised by Qatar Foundation to celebrate the traditional mid-Ramadan children’s festival. The event saw participation from more than 3,000 children and their families, who enjoyed a number of entertaining activities, including arts and crafts, storytelling, games, pony rides, time-honoured folk songs, and puppet shows.
Commenting on the many children’s activities, Dr Claudia Lux, Project Director at Qatar National Library, said: “Through these activities, and in support of Qatar Foundation, QNL aims to promote and encourage reading among young people to preserve Qatar’s heritage,”
“There is perfect synergy between the training programmes and QNL’s mission to spread knowledge, nurture imagination, cultivate creativity, and preserve the nation’s heritage for the future.” She added.
Included in QNL’s brand new state-of-the-art facilities will be a variety of collaborative and individual learning spaces, a Children's Section, which will offer early literacy programmes, story times, craft activities, summer reading programmes, book clubs, exciting performers and much more.
