Qatar National Library collaborated with Sidra Medicine to host Dr. Ahmed Hankir, physician, lecturer, mental health activist and author of The Wounded Healer, on 16 February.
Dr. Hankir presented his award-winning program, which blends performing arts with psychiatry to describe his personal journey as a survivor of psychological trauma to becoming an award-winning “wounded healer.” Dr. Hankir has delivered his storytelling approach to challenging the stigma of mental health issues in 13 countries.
“My personal journey serves as a message of hope for everyone, and my struggle with mental illness has not only made me become a better doctor, but also a better person. I have successfully overcome psychological distress and embraced my vulnerabilities overtime,” said Dr. Hankir.
Dr. Hankir added: “Treatment for mental distress is available and it is nothing to be ashamed of. Seeking help from others is a sign of strength and it really is the first important step. If I can recover, anyone else can, so never lose hope.”
Mohammed Shafi was among the participants at the event and said: “It is really important for educational institutions to address the stigma related to mental health issues. The lecture was therefore very informative to understand what people with mental health go through and how to help them.”
