Women's day

International Women’s Day has been celebrated around the world since the United Nations proclaimed it in 1977. Even before that, however, countries such as Germany, the US, the USSR, Spain and China honored women with a dedicated holiday in late February or early March.

The theme of International Women’s Day 2022 is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, recognizing the contribution of women and girls around the world who are leading the fight against climate change to build a more sustainable future for all.

Women have long played a key role in social and economic life in Qatar and the Middle East, leading development in fields as diverse as education and medicine. Buthaina Hassan Al Ansari explores the effect of Qatar’s economic book on women in her book Qatari Women: Before and After Oil and Gas. Alanoud Ahmed Al Thani looks at similar evolutions in Constants and Transformations in the Development Paths of Qatari Women, 1995 – 2013.
